Plenty o' fights this weekend, some good, some...not so good...
Yes, there are two MMA events this weekend. The first one I'm taping just because of the curiousity factor; I don't think there's any way it will be a success. Yes, the CBS airing of the first-ever primetime network televised MMA show. And no, it's not the UFC, it's Elite XC, a company most famous for hiring YouTube backyard brawler Kevin "Kimbo Slice" Ferguson and attempting to present him as a real mixed martial artist. Now, Ferguson, who is currently training under the legendary Russian Bas Rutten, may some day become one of the great fighters in the game. But at this point, he's pretty much a black Tank Abbott, a brawler with knockout power who keeps getting matched up against opponents that he could destroy in his sleep. So "Slice" is in the main event, and Gina "Crush" Carano is also on the card, who is perhaps the most famous woman mixed martial artist in the country. So yes, due to these two, I'm curious, but I don't believe for a second that any of the fights(with the exception of Carano's and Nick Diaz') will be even good, much less great. Now that that's out of the way, how about I talk about the other show this weekend? The card at which will be decided the WEC Featherweight championship. Two amazingly talented competitors: champion "The California Kid" Urijah Faber versus challenger Jens "Lil Evil" Pulver. On the one hand, you have Faber. He's 20-1, has never been past the third round in all that time, and comes up with shit that even I, a longtime fan, have never seen. Case in point, in his last fight against Jeff Curran, when Curran tried to catch him in a single-leg takedown, Faber hit Curran with a jumping knee with his other leg off the ground. That's impressive. Then, you have Pulver. He's 22-8-1 overall, but in the Featherweight(145 lbs) division, he's 8-0, with seven of those wins by KO and the last a choke submission. He was ranked #1 in the world in that weight class before he moved back up to Lightweight(155 lbs) last year. In his most recent fight, against Cub Swanson, he stuffed a Swanson takedown, outgrappled him, and choked him out...in thirty-five seconds. I can honestly say I don't care which of these guys wins, it's going to be that good of a match. I want to see nonstop action for four five-minute rounds, then more action for about four and a half minutes, then have someone win definitively in the last minute or so of the fifth. Hell, I wouldn't even mind a decsion, as long as it's a definitive one. I'm a Jens fan, and I'll be rooting for him, but really, the match has the potential to be so good that I'm practically drooling. *drool*
